"Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world. Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you where you long to be... Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar, and you'll live as you've never lived before."

- Erich Fromm

Quick Notes

Welcome new subscribers and long time followers. I trust you've all had wonderful holidays and have already set your intentions for this "masterful" year - 2009. (Discover why this is a "masterful" year in my recent blogpost. You'll also find a powerful way to set your intentions for this year - it's not too late!)

Part of my intention for this year was to finish up the "transformation" to my new websites and to this new newsletter. As many of you know, last year, my original site, Spiritual Coaching Center, went through a transformation and morphed into Your Soul Journey Coaching and Your Soul Music. Additionally, my original newsletter, "Create a Happy 'Tude," is now replaced with this new one, "TIPs for the Journey."

All this "morphing" has been a part of my Soul Journey - bringing myself and my work more into alignment with the Truth of Who I Really Am. For me, that meant embracing the musician, the teacher, the coach, and the healer in me (even thought at times it was scary) and giving those different aspects of who I am permission to reveal themselves in whatever way they needed. And with my highest intention being to use my gifts and talents to serve, this also meant stepping out of the way and letting go, and Trusting the Universe, or you could say, Trusting the Process.

You see... life... it's all a Journey - a journey back to the Truth of Who We Are; back to living, breathing, and BEing our true Inner Essence; back to being ONE with our Source - the Atonement or At-One-Ment... it's all part of the Soul's Journey.

The purpose of TIPs for the Journey is to offer you "tools" and "tips" for Your Journey - information, products, and services that will guide you and inspire you to reconnect with your Inner Essence and move you into Your Greatness so that you may become all that you were meant to be... So that you can Live and BE the Truth of Who You Really Are.

Transformation in Progress

"A human being has so many skins inside, covering the depths of the heart. We know so many things, but we don't know ourselves! Why, thirty or forty skins or hides, as thick and hard as an ox's or bear's, cover the soul. Go into your own ground
and learn to know yourself there."

- Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) German Writer & Theologian

The Soul Journey is about transformation - learning, growing, becoming. It's about grasping the bigger picture of who you are, making changes, modifications, improvements, and yes, sometimes even complete overhauls, as you continue to move forward on the path to wholeness and learning to live in integrity with your Truth.

The first step to living authentically is being able to answer the question: Who Am I?

“There is only one journey. Going inside yourself.”

- Rainer Maria Rilke

Throughout history there have been countless admonitions telling us to “go within” – Rilke’s words from the turn of the 20th century, “know thyself” from ancient Greece, and “be still and know” from the Old Testament Bible are just some of the spiritual directives handed down to us.

This fundamental truth put in today’s language is simply...

In order to grow personally and spiritually, you must look inside yourself.

How do you answer the question? Who are you?

To get started, look at the various roles you play in the different areas of your life - home, work, hobbies, social, etc. (Ex: Mother, father, husband, parent, daughter, executive, secretary, gardner, personal "chauffer", confidant, friend, coworker, etc.)

Make a list of all the ones you can think of.

Then, take a closer look at each of the roles, titles, or descriptions you wrote down. Look inside and feel the "essence" of each of one. Who are you in each of these roles? One way to think of it might be to describe your attitude or frame of mind while you engaged in each role. Where are you coming from?

Take some time to jot down descriptive words for each role you listed.

Now, go back through your list and see if your "essence" - who you are inside - is consistent throughout each role? Or does it change depending on the role you're playing?

For instance, are you assertive in your work relationships, but tend to give too much in your personal ones? Or maybe it's the other way around? Do you have clear boundaries with co-workers, but tend to let your children get away with too much?

Are there any roles or areas of your life where you feel yourself holding back or tolerating?

Look at each role and feel if there is a lightness or a heaviness surrounding it. If there is heaviness, or a resistant feeling, look deeper and see if there are any "supposed to's" or "shoulds" attached to it. What's your motivation? Are you doing this because you feel like you have to? Or are you doing it from a place of love?

When we are living in integrity with Who We Are, our thoughts, words, and actions are in alignment.... which means, in all our various roles and relationships, our Inner Essence is constant, and we are consistantly coming from a place of love.

Soul Song Strategy

We know from quantum physics that everything is energy. When the ancients spoke of energy they used the concept of "sacred sound." Every culture speaks of Sacred Sound using their own terms. In Christianity, it is referred to as "the Word." "In the begining was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)

In ancient China, it was referred to as "Kung" or the cosmic tone. The ancient seers of India referred to Sacred Sound as Shabda.

"In India, it is said, the universe hangs on sound. Not ordinary sound, but a cosmic vibration so massive and subtle and all-encompasing that everything seen and unseen (including man) is filled with it."

- David Reck, Music of the Whole Earth

Pythagorus of Samos, a Greek mathematician, philosopher, and musician, called Sacred Sound "music of the spheres." He viewed sound to be the link between the gods and man.

Today, we all know, intrinsically that music has power. It can move us in ways that nothing else can. According to David Beaulieu, PhD, musician, author of Music and Sound in the Healing Arts, audible sound - the sound that we hear with our ears - is the gateway to this life energy called Sacred Sound. (Click here to learn more interesting facts about music, sound, and vibration.)

If you have your own Soul's Song you can use it in the following exercise. If not, choose a piece of music that you love to listen to. You are about to take a "sonic journey." You are going to a level beyond just "hearing" the music. So give yourself permission to let go....

Get into a comfortable position where you will be undisturbed. Close your eyes, and as you listen to your song, allow your imagination to just "go" with the sound. Give yourself permission to have images with the different melodies or motives within the piece. Let your imagination soar with the different instruments or sounds you hear. Allow the music to transport you to magical places.

After the song is finished, sit in the silence for a few minutes. Become aware of your breathing and the life energy within you and around you. Think of the silence as the source of all sound, much like the color white is the total of all color spectrums.

When you are ready, open your eyes and take a few moments to reflect on your experience. You may want to make a few notes in your journal. Try the exercise at a different time with the same song to see if your experience changes. Or try it with a different song. Note the differences or similarities in each sitting.
