Happy New Year... I mean... Happy April Fool's Day! :)

Back before the Gregorian calendar became the official calendar, April 1st was considered to be the first day of the year. But everybody didn't get the word right away, or either refused to believe it entirely. These "traditionalists" continued to celebrate the New Year's Day on April 1 instead of January 1, and the "modernists" would make fun of them by sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to get them to believe something that was not true. (Find out more history here: April Fools Day)

Let this April Fool's Day be a reminder to "lighten up!" Here's just a few suggestions:

  • Play a (fun) joke on some one
  • Tell a humorus event that happened to you
  • Share your favorite joke
  • Talk about what makes you happy or what lifts your spirits when you're down
  • Cheer up a co-worker who seems to be having a bad day
  • Walk around with a big grin on your face.... It will make people wonder what you've been up to! :)
  • Better yet... just choose to be happy!

Just for today make a choice that you'll let whatever usually gets you ruffled, or gets your dander up... that you'll just let it go.... and see what happens.

Who knows, you might end up being a little less stressed or have a really FUN day!

~ Namaste, Becky

Stress Relief Meditation is a guided meditation I originally created for a Health Fair at a local engineering firm I was asked to participate in a couple of years ago. Living with a highly-stressed engineer, I knew this would be something they'd be interested in! Later, I revised it and added it to my products.

This 27-minute meditation is designed to help you relax and let go of the stressors in your life. Throughout the meditation, you are gently guided to release any negative thoughts, feelings, angers, or fears you may have, leaving you with a sense of gratitude and peace. Listen to a sample

This meditation is included in the De-Stress Process Self-Study Tool

Laughter - the Best Medicine for Stress Relief

"Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain. A day without laughter is a day wasted."

- Charlie Chaplin

There is a two-way communcation system that links the mind, the immune system, and other systems throughout our body. This pathway "...through which our emotions - our hopes and fears - can affect the body's ability to defend itself." (Joan Borysenko, PhD, Minding the Body, Mending the Mind)

We of course, don't get sick everytime we're stressed. But according to Dr. Borysendo, it's "reasonable to consider sstress as one of the many factors that may tip the balance toward illness."

There are many ways to work through and relieve the many stresses of life - exercise, yoga, Tai Chi, massage, meditation, self-hypnosis, journaling. But the one that's the most fun is laughter!

Norman Cousins, author of Anatomy of an Illness used laughter to cure a stress-produced "incurable" connective tissue disease. He found that when he watch old Marx Brothers movies he would have those genuine kind of deep belly laughs, and he would be able to sleep at least two hours pain free. So he combined daily doses of laughter with medical treatment and made a full recovery.

Research since has shown that laughter is indeed powerful medicine. At Loma Linda University in California, doctors studied the changes in epinephrine, cortisol levels, and the natural killer cell activity (NKA) in response to laughter. In that test, one group watched a 60-minute funny video while the control group did not. Blood samples taken from both groups before, during, and after the video showed that those in the experimental group had a decrease in both epinephrine and cortisol levels, and an increase in NKA.

Epinephrine and cortisol are immunosuppressive and are linked to stress-related diseases such as ulcers, high blood pressure, and coronary heart disease. So lowering these levels with a big dose of laughter can make a person feel better physically and emotionally.

Laughter, or "internal jogging" as Cousins calls it, along with love and other positive emotions and actions can unite the body's natural defenses against stress, pain, and disease.

Here are some of the benefits of laughter:

  • Improves your immune system
  • Causes the body to produce it's own natural painkillers
  • Stimulates your organs
  • Makes you feel relaxed
  • Eases digestion
  • Stimulates circulation
  • Provides a physical and emotional release
  • Exercises the diaphragm
  • Provides a healthy distraction from anger, guilt, stress and negative emotions
  • Helps give a more lighthearted perspective about life
  • Can make difficult situations a bit easier to handle, increasing personal satisfaction
  • Connects us with others

So lighten up! Add some laughter and fun to your life. It's for your own good!

"I communicate from my heart.
Love surrounds and protects me."

- Soul Coaching Oracle Cards Guidebook, Denis Linn

As I spoke about in last month's ezine, the human voice has power.

And as we speak and communicate with others, our words can either be very hurtful, or they can be very healing.

The difference is in our intention - or attitude - behind the words. That's what is a actually being communicated. For instance, the simple phrase, "I love you" or "I really care about you" can be said many different ways, with very many different attitudes.... And the person you're speaking to will feel the difference - whether it's in their immediate awareness or not.

Try it out with a friend. Say one of these phrases or pick one of your own. Try saying it with various attitudes like, sarcasm, hate, apathy, love.... Then have them try it out on you.

Note the differences in tone quality, physical gestures, posture... How did each one feel as it was said to you?

Make sure in this exercise to end with a positive statement! So you're both left feeling good and supported!!

If you have your Soul's Song, the next time you listen to it, add some positive heart-felt affirmations.

Make a list of positive statements - figure two statements per minute. Say them slowly from your heart as you listen to your soul song. Repeat each one 3 times before going on to the next one. Really get into the feeling of it. Take a deep slow breath between each statement to really center it into your heart. (You can also do this process with any instrumental piece of music that has meaning for you.)

If you would like to have your affirmations recorded over your soul song so that you can just listen to it, send me an email. I would be happy to do this for you.

If you do not yet have your Soul Song, and would like to work more with this Affirmation Meditation idea, check out Custom Affirmation Meditations.

Meditation and using affirmations are both very effective stress management tools, as well as powerful tools for creating positive change in your life.
